What Are Mango Butter and Jojoba Oil?

Meet Two of Fall's Hardest-Working Ingredients

Seasonal Skin School, Learning Module SF004

Quick Answer

Mango butter is a soft, creamy butter pressed from the kernel inside a mango seed. Jojoba oil is a golden liquid pressed from the seeds of the jojoba shrub, and it is technically a liquid wax, not an oil. Together they help soften skin and hold moisture in without feeling heavy.

Welcome

Welcome back to Seasonal Skin School. In SF003 we compared body oils, lotions and body butters, and learned that texture should follow your skin, not the calendar. This week we are opening the jar and reading the label. If you have ever seen "mango butter" or "jojoba oil" on an ingredient list and wondered what they actually do, this lesson is for you.

Why This Matters

When you know what an ingredient is, you stop buying on hope. You can look at a label and understand why a product feels the way it does, and whether it is likely to suit your skin. That is confidence, and it saves you money and frustration.

What Is Mango Butter?

Mango butter comes from the kernel, the firm seed hidden inside the mango pit. The kernels are dried and pressed, and the result is a pale, creamy butter with almost no scent. It does not smell like mango fruit, which surprises a lot of people.

Mango butter is rich in fatty acids, mostly stearic and oleic acid. On your skin, that means it softens and smooths while leaving a light protective layer that slows down water loss. It is a little firmer than shea butter in the jar, but it melts quickly once it touches warm skin.

Mango butter may be a good fit if you like the richness of a butter but want something that absorbs without a greasy finish.

What Is Jojoba Oil?

Jojoba ("ho-HO-ba") is a desert shrub native to the American Southwest and northern Mexico. Its seeds are pressed to produce a golden liquid we call jojoba oil.

Here is the interesting part: jojoba is not a true oil. It is a liquid wax. Its structure is close to the wax esters found in your skin's own natural oils, which is one reason it tends to feel so comfortable and sink in so easily. It is also very stable, so it stays fresh longer than many plant oils.

Jojoba oil may be a good fit if heavier oils tend to sit on top of your skin, or if you want softness without shine.

Why They Work So Well Together

Butters and liquid oils do different jobs. A butter brings body and staying power. A liquid wax like jojoba helps the butter spread, soften and absorb. Blend the two with shea butter and you get a moisturizer that glides on, melts in and keeps working for hours.

Keep in mind that neither ingredient adds water to your skin. Like the oils we talked about in SF003, they help your skin hold onto the water that is already there. That is why applying them to slightly damp skin makes such a difference.

The Body Love Seasonal Shift

As the air gets cooler and drier, this is a good time to reach for a butter in the places that feel tight first: shins, arms, hands. You do not need a lot. A small scoop warmed between your palms goes a long way.

Our Selah & Surrender body butters are made with shea butter, mango butter and jojoba oil, in six fall scents. If you already have a jar, now you know exactly what is working for you inside it.

Body Love Perspective

We believe you deserve to understand what you put on your skin. Ingredients are not magic, and they are not mysteries either. They are gifts from the earth with real, simple jobs. Self-care is stewardship, and stewardship starts with knowing what you are holding.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does mango butter smell like mango?

No. Mango butter comes from the seed kernel, not the fruit, and it has a very mild, almost neutral scent. Any fragrance in a mango butter product comes from the essential oils or fragrance added to it.

Is mango butter safe if I am allergic to mangoes?

Mango allergies vary from person to person, so we cannot promise how your skin will respond. If you have a known mango, latex or tree nut allergy, check with your doctor first and always patch test a small area before using a new product.

Will jojoba oil make my skin feel greasy?

Most people find jojoba light and fast-absorbing. If your skin feels slick afterward, you are probably using more than you need. Start with a few drops or a small scoop and add from there.

Keep Learning

Next week in SF005 we are tackling a question that comes up every single fall: do you still need sunscreen when the weather cools down? The answer may change your morning routine.

When you know your ingredients, you can choose with confidence.Β

Come curious. Leave confident.
